World Day Against Death Penalty 2023

‘Death Penalty: An Irreversible Torture’

About the Event Section:

Unlocking Minds for Justice

Since 2014, Justice Project Pakistan (JPP) has been dedicated to raising awareness and fostering discussions surrounding the plight of the most vulnerable prisoners facing the harshest sentences. JPP’s immersive events serve as a dynamic platform for engaging with critical issues, including torture, the rights of the mentally ill and the overall reform of the criminal justice system. In their efforts, JPP strives to protect and uphold the fundamental rights of prisoners, making significant strides in advocating for criminal justice reform.

This Year’s Theme: ‘Death Penalty: An Irreversible Torture’

Let’s dive into the harrowing intersection of the death penalty and torture, a topic that has become increasingly relevant in recent times. The recent enactment of Pakistan’s Custodial Torture and Death (Prevention and Punishment) Act in 2022 sheds light on a deeply disturbing reality: custodial torture paves the way for wrongful convictions, with tragic consequences that often lead to the imposition of the death penalty. It disproportionately affects society’s most vulnerable individuals—those who have been coerced into confessing under torture or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, ultimately finding themselves condemned to death. Discrimination based on factors such as poverty, gender, age, religion, ethnicity and vulnerabilities such as psycho-social disabilities, only compounds the cruelty faced by these individuals in their quest for justice.
